Looking Back with Gratitude

Today, we joyfully celebrate the 99th Anniversary of the Dedication of the Cathedral of Saint Joseph. Though the actual date of the Cathedral’s dedication was April 21, 1926, we commemorate it today, outside of the Octave of Easter, with hearts full of gratitude for the many blessings we have received.

On that historic day nearly a century ago, Bishop John J. Swint consecrated the Cathedral as the mother church of the Diocese of Wheeling (now Wheeling-Charleston). Since then, this sacred space has been the setting for countless celebrations of the sacraments, moments of prayer, and pilgrimages of faith. Every stone of this Cathedral bears witness to the prayers and sacrifices of those who came before us, and to the enduring strength of our Catholic community.

Rooted in History

The Cathedral of Saint Joseph stands on a foundation of deep faith stretching back to Wheeling’s earliest Catholic presence. In 1822, Wheeling’s first Catholic parish was founded, initially worshipping in modest settings. By 1847, a new church dedicated to Saint James the Apostle was built at the corner of Eoff and 13th Streets and soon became the cathedral church for the newly established Diocese of Wheeling.

In 1872, with devotion to Saint Joseph growing among the people, Bishop Richard V. Whelan successfully petitioned Rome to rename the cathedral in honor of Saint Joseph. The original Cathedral served the faithful for many decades, but by the early 20th century, it had fallen into disrepair. After a devastating fire in 1923, Bishop Swint saw the need for a new, grander structure that would be worthy of its role as the heart of the diocese.

Designed in the Lombard Romanesque style by architect Edward J. Weber and inspired by the ancient churches of Italy, the present Cathedral was built with Indiana limestone between 1923 and 1926. With its soaring dome, rich artwork, and beautiful stained glass windows, it remains one of the great treasures of Catholic life in West Virginia.

Looking Ahead with Hope

As we mark this 99th anniversary, we not only look back with pride and thanksgiving, but also look forward with excitement. Next year, we will celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Dedication of our Cathedral — a once-in-a-lifetime milestone. Special liturgies, events, and celebrations are already being planned to commemorate this historic moment in the life of our parish and diocese.

We pray that as we enter this centennial year, the Cathedral of Saint Joseph will continue to be a house of prayer for all people — a place where Christ is proclaimed, where the sacraments are celebrated with reverence and beauty, and where faith, hope, and charity shine brightly for all who enter.

Saint Joseph, Protector of the Church, pray for us!
