Children’s Faith Formation

The Children’s Faith Formation program at the Cathedral of St. Joseph exists to communicate the Good News of Jesus Christ in the context of the beliefs and practices of the Roman Catholic Church. It provides sacramental preparation for First Reconciliation, First Eucharist, and Confirmation as well as ongoing faith formation for children in First through Eighth Grades.

The sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Communion are foundational milestones in a child’s spiritual journey. These sacraments are typically celebrated in May, with preparation classes beginning the previous fall. Children will learn about God’s love, forgiveness, and the importance of the Eucharist in their faith. Through prayer, scripture, and hands-on activities, they will gain a deeper understanding of these sacred moments. The program supports families in nurturing a life of faith, guiding children toward a personal encounter with Christ through the sacraments.

The Sacrament of Confirmation is a vital step in a child’s faith formation, strengthening their relationship with the Holy Spirit and the Church. Confirmation is celebrated each spring, with preparation classes beginning the previous fall. The program focuses on deepening the understanding of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, the responsibilities of being a disciple, and the call to live out one’s faith in the world. Through engaging lessons, discussions, and service projects, candidates are equipped to take on a more active role in the Church as they prepare to receive the sacrament.

The Children’s Liturgy of the Word is held each Sunday during the 10:30 a.m. Mass, offering children ages 4-12 the opportunity to engage with the Scripture readings in a way that is meaningful and accessible to them. After the Opening Prayer, children are invited to come forward and join two trained catechists for a special time of reflection, discussion, and activities based on the day’s readings. This program helps children understand the liturgical message in an interactive setting, allowing them to grow in their faith and understanding of the Mass before returning during the Offertory.
