October 7, 2025

On October 13, 1917, during her final appearance to the shepherd children of Fatima, Our Lady revealed her identity: “I am the Lady of the Rosary.” How striking that, in the midst of World War I—a time of violence, fear, and uncertainty—she chose this title above all others. Each time she appeared, she urged the children to pray the Rosary for peace and for the end of the war. When we reflect on the power of this prayer, her insistence is no surprise.

The Rosary is precious to Our Lady because it leads us, through her maternal intercession, ever deeper into the mystery of Christ. It combines prayers rooted in Sacred Scripture—the Our Father and the Hail Mary—with those drawn from Sacred Tradition, such as the Apostles’ Creed and the Glory Be. In its rhythm, repetition, and contemplation, the Rosary gently guides us into the life of Christ and the love of His Mother.

Tradition holds that the Rosary was entrusted to St. Dominic by the Blessed Mother herself. Whether or not that account is literally so, what is clear is that the Rosary has long held a privileged place in the life of the Church. Its power lies not merely in the words we recite, but in how it strengthens our bond with Jesus and Mary, drawing us to the very heart of our faith.

St. Padre Pio called the Rosary “the weapon for our time.” In an age marked by confusion, violence, and division, it remains a remedy of hope and peace.

This year, Pope Leo XIV has renewed this call, encouraging all the faithful to pray the Rosary daily throughout the month of October, offering it in a special way for peace in our world, our families, and our communities. In doing so, the Holy Father echoes the same maternal plea first spoken at Fatima: that through the Rosary, hearts may be converted and peace restored.

The Spiritual Fruits of the Rosary

Those who faithfully pray the Rosary discover its quiet yet transformative power. Among its many fruits:

  • The Rosary brings peace in a fractured world.

  • It unites families in prayer.

  • It restores structured prayer that fosters meditation.

  • It quiets the heart and creates space for God.

  • It proclaims the truth of the Incarnation, Redemption, and Resurrection.

  • It shields us from evil and strengthens us in trials.

  • It converts hearts—our own and those we pray for.

  • It deepens our relationship with Mary, the Mother given to us by Christ.

During this Month of the Rosary, let us take up our beads with renewed devotion, joining countless believers through the centuries who have trusted in Mary’s promise. When we pray the Rosary, we walk a well-worn path of grace, sanctified by generations of saints who have found peace, courage, and strength through this humble devotion.

St. John Paul II beautifully reminded us: “The holy rosary introduces us into the very heart of faith. With our thought fixed on it, we greet repetitively, joyfully, the holy Mother of God; declare blessed the Son, the sweet fruit of her womb; and invoke her motherly protection in life and in death.”

As we echo the angel’s greeting and contemplate the mysteries of salvation, may Our Lady of the Rosary lead us ever closer to her Son—our Prince of Peace.
